No need to adhere to a diet in order to control the level of cholesterol in the blood. According to recent studies, the use of widely available niacin helps to greatly reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.
If the patient wants to try the diet, he should know two things:
1) His trial diet during these two months should be such that he is willing to follow the rest of their lives.
2) There is no need to adhere to a diet in order to control the level of cholesterol in the blood! This slogan is the title of my statements of principle to all patients with lipid problems.
I would recommend you start by consuming fish 2-3 times a week, drink/eat 3 servings of low fat dairy per day and eating whole grains. I would avoid eating red meat and butter. Remember to continue to engage in physical activity for at least 30 minutes five days a week. It is possible that your cholesterol is elevated because of genetics but nonetheless it is important that you try to control it.
Daily exercise and diet are the most important factors. For diet, focus on fats, fiber, and carbs (including sugar).. Some fats help to lower cholesterol and some raise it. One type of fiber (soluble) will lower cholesterol and one type will not. Read this short article series (4 of them) because they will explain exactly how to lower cholesterol through diet. (article on fats) (article of fiber) (sugar) and (carbs).
