Total cholesterol should be under 200-
Triglycerides should be under 150-
HDL or the good cholesterol should be above 40 the higher the better
LDL or the bad cholesterol should be under 130
To lower your total cholesterol do a low fat diet or a no fat diet. To lower the triglycerides lower starches and sweets and any alcohol intake. To increase the HDL increase physical exercise.
Alot of people do fish oil supplements that is a medication OTC to help there cholesterol taking 1 capsule twice a day.
Dyslipidemia is elevation of plasma cholesterol and/or TGs or a low HDL level that contributes to the development of atherosclerosis. Causes may be primary (genetic) or secondary. Diagnosis is by measuring plasma levels of total cholesterol, TGs, and individual lipoproteins. Treatment is dietary changes, exercise, and lipid-lowering drugs.
The statins (or HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors) form a class of hypolipidemic drugs used to lower cholesterol levels in people with or at risk of cardiovascular disease. They lower cholesterol by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which is the rate-limiting enzyme of the mevalonate pathway of cholesterol synthesis. Inhibition of this enzyme in the liver stimulates LDL receptors, resulting in an increased clearance of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) from the bloodstream and a decrease in blood cholesterol levels. The first results can be seen after one week of use and the effect is maximal after four to six weeks.
Please see the web pages for more details on Hypercholesterolemia / Dyslipidemia, Cholesterol, LDL, HDL and Triglycerides.
The way I looked at these numbers I don’t see how in the world the doctor could tell her it is high. My total cholesterol before they put me on Lipitor was 300 and now is down to 150. For her age, your mom has good cholesterol, she just needs to make sure the numbers do not climb up and she can do that by eating healthy and exercising and getting good night rest. Regarding cholesterol reducing drugs, they are statins and it is suppose to prevent strokes and heart attacks, I don’t know if there is a ratio to this or not. I am also on aspirin regiment of 81 mg (baby aspirin) per day and this was prescribed to me in order for my blood not be sticking.
