If heart disease is the #1 killer, why is all the attention seemingly on things like tobacco?

Cigarette smoking is the most important risk factor in heart disease for young men and women.

Tobacco use is directly known to be the cause of numerous cancer, & heart & lung diseases. The sad fact is this cause is 100% preventable.

Cholesterol found in food is harder to ***** down on because the food products are wide-spread throughout the country. It has numerous sources.

Death from tobacco is probably the most preventable disease. Places are starting to attack bad food, such as NYC’s recent ban on artificial trans-fats in restaurants. That type of regulation is very controversial and a lot of people resent it. Although, the idea of smoking bans must have seemed like an awful intrusion on private liberties a few decades ago.

Attention is on Tobacco BECAUSE, as you say, heart disease is the #1 killer.

Cigarette and tobacco smoke, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, obesity and diabetes are the six major independent risk factors for coronary heart disease that you can modify or control. Cigarette smoking is so widespread and significant as a risk factor that the Surgeon General has called it “the leading preventable cause of disease and deaths in the United States.”

Cigarette smoking increases the risk of coronary heart disease by itself. When it acts with other factors, it greatly increases risk. Smoking increases blood pressure, decreases exercise tolerance and increases the tendency for blood to clot. Smoking also increases the risk of recurrent coronary heart disease after bypass surgery.

Cigarette smoking is the most important risk factor for young men and women. It produces a greater relative risk in persons under age 50 than in those over 50.

Women who smoke and use oral contraceptives greatly increase their risk of coronary heart disease and stroke compared with nonsmoking women who use oral contraceptives.

Smoking decreases HDL (good) cholesterol. Cigarette smoking combined with a family history of heart disease also seems to greatly increase the risk.

Both cancer and heart disease are degenerative disease. Smoking is an unnecessary part of life, is addictive, and taobacco companies have been increasing the nicotine in cigarettes to stop people from quitting. Heart disease is caused by lack of antioxidants in the diet, and of course eating is necessary.

Because tobacco cause internal sympathetic nervous system compensatory mechanisms that cause atherosclerosis from the damage done to the intima of blood vessels. The resut from atherosclerosis is CAD (Coronary Artery Disease) which is clotting of the arteries.
